Press Kit: Do’s and Don'ts

Keep your band's press kit out of the recycle bin
Building a press kit is not as disheartening as it sounds. For those artists on a “shoe-string” budget, you don't need an elaborate folder of glossy media materials. Most indie bands should keep their press kit simple by sending out only the basics that consist of four things: a personalized cover letter, a "one-sheet" about the band, a copy of the band’s CD and business card. That’s it!

Also, before you e-mail a link from your band’s music web page, find out if the agency will accept press kits in electronic formats. Some agencies still prefer to have the audio on compact disc allowing them to upload their favorite single into their CD player while driving in the car. Also, the agent may also want to make copies of the audio and/or e-mail or send to a potential venue buyer interested in booking you.
