Press Kits: Q&A
Since posting our BlogSpot, we have received an influx of e-mails regarding what information a Press Kit should include.
Before we run through what information a press kit should include, it is important for us to define a press kit. A press kit, often referred to as a media kit in business environments, is a pre-packaged set of promotional materials of a person, company, or organization distributed to members of the media for promotional use. They are often distributed to announce a release or for a news conference. Now that we've got that out of the way, let's move on.
If you're a music artist/entertainer, a press kit and/or media kit should contain the following materials:
- A well written biography
- An 8 X 10 color photograph
- A compact disc with updated music
- Your booking information
- Local Press, if any
- Updated Tour Dates
- Radio-Airplay, if any
- Music Licensing, if any
- Public Relations Dept.
- Your business card
Be creative when designing your press kit. But, keep it simple. Clubs and/or talent buyers only care about Bands that have a draw. Yes, the music is important, but filling up every seat in the club takes precedence!! It’s all about the bottom-line. Lastly, do not include audio that has not been professionally mixed and mastered!! That's a sure way of getting your music thrown in the trash!
Big G Artists Agency, LLC, has a team of graphics artists/designers who can work with you and help you build an amazing press kit at an affordable price. Also, never provide a photograph in black and white. Booking agents and talent buyers want to see the real you.
Next, if your Band does not have a draw and/or fan base, talent buyers know it and believe your band lacks potential and seldom are they willing to take a chance on losing money by booking you. It’s all about the “Mucho Deniro!” A Band has a greater chance of getting booked if represented by a legitimate talent agent. Our job is to make you look good and keep you working! We have to convince these talent buyers why they should book you to perform at their venue and how revenues will increase.
Once you've prepared your press kit/media kit, the next step is to find a talent booking agency that is willing to work hard on your behalf by representing you in your 'best' light.
