Money and power are the most desirable assets of a major record label. In order to successfully release an album nationally and expect it to have widespread appeal and attract the attention of the majority of people who listen to new music, a significant amount of money must be invested in the release. Because of their financial structure, it appears that major labels simply have an advantage over independent labels. Well, at the same time, indie artists have a significant advantage over major labels. But, it's going to take a lot of work 24/7... 365 days a year!!
Get your music out there! Internet Radio airplay is a good source. Also, iTunes, Amazon and the other gazillion digital music distribution web sites. You can also do what artists did back in the day, by selling your music out of your trunk. You can also put your Cd’s on consignment at coffee shops and etc. Be creative! You have the advantage of putting your music in front of the actual listener (face-to-face.)
Consumers of mainstream music listen to the radio to hear their favorite songs, and greatly rely on it to introduce them to new music. However, an indie artist can introduce him/herself to the consumer and give the consumer free demo tapes... maybe even invite a few fans to a show and introduce them on stage as thir BIGGEST FANS! Wouldn't that set things off!! I bet you'd have friends for life! If consumers like your music, they will want to hear more and just as a rumor spreads… so will your popularity and music demand.
Support other indie artists by purchasing music from local and national artists. Have listening parties and bring your favorite cd exchange information about the artist, music arrangement and etc. Have a strong voice regarding the music you want to hear. Do not allow record companies to manipulate you and dictate the kind of music they believe you want to hear. You are smarter than that!!
Good listening!
